Since the mid-1970’s the Georgetown Food Bank has served our City’s hungry in South Seattle. After the Society of St Vincent de Paul assumed responsibility for the Food Bank it was relocated to its current address of 5972 4th Avenue S in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood. Our Food Bank has been and continues to be a vital source of food weekly for our poor and homeless guests and their families.
“Everyone Eats Today” tells of our Vision and Mission in serving our guests. No person is turned away. During these difficult economic times we provide food to nearly 2,400 guests for almost 21,600 meals each week. We are grateful that the donations from our donors are providing food for well-balanced diets of quality meat, fruit and vegetables. In addition, donors provide canned goods and dry goods as well as the very special pastries and cookies!
We salute and thank our donors and volunteers for their commitment to serve and feed the poor and homeless. Be a part of making certain “Everyone Eats Today”!
We are proud of the recognition Unified Grocers of Seattle received at the 2009 “Mayor’s End Hunger” awards for their support of us and the entire food bank system with produce and dry goods. Unified’s managers and warehouse employees are a blessing to work with in meeting our objective of “Everyone Eats Today”.
“The Boeing Employees’ Community Fund has very generously awarded a grant to our Food Bank for several repairs and upgrades including a leaking roof replacement, repair or the floor and linoleum replacement, and new intake desks. What a tremendous gift to repair and improve our old Georgetown style warehouse! BECF and those who support it are fantastic!”
During the next few weeks additional improvements will be completed.
These include:
· New self-contained intake desks
· Re-opening our used clothing area as a boutique with fresh paint, a large wall mirror, portable shelves and racks of labeled clothes.
· Expanding our indoor guest waiting area in order to bring more guests into the Food Bank and protect them from the weather and street traffic.
· Replacing leak damaged wet ceiling insulation.
All this and more has been made possible because of the “Boeing Employees’ Community Fund” gift for flooring, roofing and intake desks. In addition to the improvements BECF funded, the Food Bank has been able take advantage by adding far less costly projects.
Together with our community partners, the St Vincent de Paul Georgetown Food and Clothing Bank is making these improvements as another way of treating our guests with respect for their dignity.
